Theology and the Movies at St. Dominic’s Church, DC
November 5, 2014
The Religious Movie Seminar at St. Dominic Priory returns for its eighth season under the leadership of Fr. Gerry Lessard, OP. The seminar had humble beginnings, initially starting as a class on the immensely popular Lord of the Rings movies in 2008. The popularity of the seminar led to a yearly course, this year’s season beginning on November 2, with a documentary on the Bible and Hollywood. Movies featured this year include Noah’s Ark (1999), The Nativity Story (2006), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), and The Night of the Iguana (1964). Fr. Lessard commented on the seminar’s value: “The seminar wonderfully unites the friars of the Center for Assisted Living with the parishioners, many of whom bring food to share. Everyone can express an opinion, yet handouts are given for further instruction. We all learn something and it’s downright fun.” For more information, see the attached flyer and syllabus. Fr. Gerry Lessard, OP made simple profession in the Order of Preachers in 1979 and was ordained a priest in 1984. Besides a four-year period as web designer for the Province, Fr. Lessard has served in parochial ministry, currently as a parochial vicar at St. Dominic’s Church in Washington, DC.
