Deviling Atheism
October 7, 2013
The Diocese of Arlington recently hosted three evenings of intense intellectual debate on hotly contested contemporary issues: sex and morality, Protestant critiques of Catholicism, and atheism and agnosticism. The series, entitled Devil’s Advocate, sought to challenge both speakers and audience members by alternating presentations for and against the Church’s position within the evening, allowing the truth to be revealed in dialogue and not merely by dictate. Fr. Thomas Joseph White, O.P., Director of the Thomistic Institute and professor at the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception, represented the Church’s view on atheism and agnosticism on September 24, answering a flight of questions both scripted and impromptu about the credibility of faith in the world today. The Diocese of Arlington recently made audio recordings of the talks available on their website. The talk from Fr. Thomas Joseph, with debate from his interlocutor, can be found here; the extemporaneous Q&A period can be found here.
