Student brother Thomas Garrett, as part of his summer ministry at Aquinas House at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, has been organizing a series of talks on the themes of the law and the life of faith.  Before entering the Dominican Order, Br. Thomas More served as a corporate attorney and a Congressional aide.

Policy that Punishes Faith: The Emerging Threat to our Religious Freedom

Br. Thomas More spoke to the Join the John Paul II Generation (Young Adults of the Upper Valley) as part of the Theology on Tap series on Tuesday, June 26th.  His talk was  held in connection with the US bishops’ call for a “Fortnight for Freedom” from June 21st through July 4th.

Religious Liberty & the US Constitution

This is a 4-week course being offered through the Waterman Institute. The Waterman Institute is an independent initiative for members of the Dartmouth College community, to allow them to pursue faith and learning together, integrating spiritual understanding and biblical study with academic rigor and scholarly discourse.  Br. Thomas More’s course will offer an abbreviated survey of the Religion Clauses of the First Amendment. The course will address (1) the definition of “religion” and the foundation of religious liberty, (2) the two Religion Clauses of the First Amendment (Establishment & Free Exercise), and (3) controversies concerning religion in conflict with claims to competing rights. Class discussion will aim to highlight some of the tensions that arise in interpreting and applying the Religion Clauses.

New Hampshire Catholic Lawyers’ Guild

Br. Thomas More will address the monthly First Friday meeting of the New Hampshire Catholic Lawyers’ Guild on Friday, July 6, 2012.  The event takes place at St. John the Evangelist Church in Concord, NH at 12:10pm.
