Providence College President Speaking Out Against HHS Mandate

April 23, 2012

Providence College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley O.P. joined The Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, Sr. Jane Gerety, RSM, president of Salve Regina University and the heads of various Catholic hospitals and health services organizations in Rhode Island in opposing the Obama Administration’s proposed Health & Human Services (HHS) policy regarding contraception and birth control. Father Shanley and the others have signed a letter to the members of the Rhode Island congressional delegation stating their opposition to the HHS mandate on the grounds that it denies these Catholic institutions the constitutional rights of religious liberty. The letter also affirms that the “accommodation” offered by the Administration falls short of the requirements of moral law. Read the letter sent to members of the congressional delegation.
