A Report in Providence: St. Pius V & St. Martin de Porres
July 12, 2011
Greetings from Providence, Rhode Island!
I am at our parish, St. Pius V across the street from Providence College, helping for this week while the pastor, Fr. Ken Letoile OP goes on retreat. One of our new priests, Fr. Hyacinth-Marie Cordell OP has arrived also for his first assignment in the parish. Bro. Jerome Zeiler OP is here serving as deacon in the parish and Bro. Charles Shonk OP is working in a soup kitchen in downtown Providence for the summer. Fr. James Cuddy OP is chaplain across the street at PC (Providence College), though right now he is in Kentucky preaching a Youth Conference which is run by our Dominican Laity called “Ignite Your Torch.”
We had 12 men come to our New England Vocation event on Sunday. If you would like to visit some of our Dominican communities, the summer is a good time. I also was able to put into practice Dominican mendicancy: I preached the parish’s annual appeal for our Dominican Missions in East Africa at the all the Masses this past weekend.
Across the street on Providence College campus is the amazing statue of St. Martin de Porres by our own, Fr. Thomas McGlynn OP who taught there for many years in the art department. I wanted to share with you some of my sights of this afternoon. You can click on the photos to enlarge them. St. Martin de Porres was a Dominican cooperator brother.
Consider making a vocation weekend with us. Have you ever thought about becoming a Dominican Cooperator Brother? (Video of St. Martin)
