Son of the Province of St. Joseph gives talk in Alaska

October 13, 2014

Although not on the normal lecture circuit for Dominicans of the Province of St. Joseph, Holy Family Cathedral in Anchorage, Alaska plays host to Br. Thomas More Garrett, OP, on Monday, October 13, at 7:00pm. Br. Garrett’s talk, titled: “Pontifical Business: The Popes, Business Ethics and the Contemporary Business Professional,” will address papal pronouncements about socio-economic concerns in relation to private commercial enterprise. The modern social encyclicals address a wide range of topics, including private property rights, the condition of workers, international development, nuclear disarmament and the care of the environment.  Included within the scope of the documents however, are teachings and advice for business practitioners engaged in the daily activities of commercial affairs.  Br. Thomas More’s talk examines the modern social encyclicals in an effort to gleam from the documents some of the guidance that the papacy has offered to the contemporary business professional. Br. Thomas More Garrett, OP, made simple profession in the Order of Preachers in 2009 and was ordained to the diaconate in 2014. He is currently pursuing his S.T.L. at the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC. Before entering the Order he practiced law and worked as a Congressional staffer. In private practice, his work focused on mergers and acquisitions, securities offerings and market regulatory compliance.
