Pilgrimage in the Footsteps of Edward Dominic Fenwick

On Friday, July 11, St. Dominic’s Parish in Youngstown, Ohio, undertook a pilgrimage to the log-cabin shrine of Dungannon. At this site back in 1817, Edward Dominic Fenwick, O.P., offered the first Mass in Northeastern Ohio, in the cabin of Daniel McCallister. Fr. Fenwick had established the Province of St. Joseph about twelve years earlier, in Springfield Kentucky, and had since acted as a missionary to Catholics living in the state of Ohio. In all, about thirty-five people aged two to eighty made the hour-long trek down from Youngstown. The group toured the parish of St. Philip Neri, a one-hundred-fifty-year-old church that was erected by the same community that Fenwick founded. Pier Giorgio Dengler, O.P., gave a brief exhortation, and led the rosary for the whole group. Afterward, Mass was celebrated by Bernard Timothy, O.P. on the same make-shift altar used by Fenwick two centuries earlier: a converted wardrobe. After posing for a few photographs, the group left for lunch at the historic Spread Eagle Tavern, which served as a stop for runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad.
