Lay and Clerical Fraternities of St. Dominic
Drawing on the tradition of the penitential movements of the 13th century, the Master of the Order of Preachers Munio de Zamora promulgated a rule for clerics and laity who wished to unite themselves to the Order of Preachers in 1285. Throughout the centuries, this tradition has been lived out in a wide variety of ways. Presently, individual lay persons and clerics drawn to live a life according to the spirit and charism of St. Dominic are able to be united to the Order by a special promise to live out the Dominican charism according to their state in life. They do so by becoming members of the Lay Fraternities or Clerical Fraternities of St. Dominic.
