Divorce and Remarriage: A Theological Assessment

July 21, 2014

A Dominican-led group of eight theologians recently released an extended theological analysis of recent proposals regarding the pastoral care of divorced and remarried persons. The document will be published in the upcoming issue of the English edition of Nova et Vetera, and is currently available for free on the Nova et Vetera website in English, German, Spanish, French, and Italian. The theological assessment appears shortly before the October meeting of the Synod of Bishops, which has as its theme “The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization.” As such, the text can serve as a preparatory study on certain issues likely to arise during the Synod. The document is intended to give a broad, synthetic understanding of the complex issues at hand, allowing the theological, historical, and pastoral dynamics of divorce and remarriage to be examined simultaneously. The essay is the fruit of the collaboration between eight scholars at three institutions: John Corbett, O.P., Andrew Hofer, O.P., Dominic Langevin, O.P., Dominic Legge, O.P., Thomas Petri, O.P., and Thomas Joseph White, O.P., all of the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception (Dominican House of Studies), Paul Keller, O.P., of the Athenaeum of Ohio, and Kurt Martens, of the Catholic University of America. The document has been made freely available at the Nova et Vetera website in the hopes that it may provide a valuable theological resource for all those who are investigating the question.
