From the website of WKBN channel 27 in Youngstown, Ohio, on the neighborhood outreach program of St. Dominic’s church in Youngstown: Youngstown’s South Side neighborhood wants kids to have fun and stay busy this summer with a free open gym. The weekday program is sponsored by St. Dominic’s Church and the local block watch. They’re receiving support from two area programs. In the morning, the Horizon Science Academy hosts games for the kids. Then, they enjoy lunch and afternoon activities at the Boys and Girls Club of Youngstown. St. Dom’s pastor, Fr. Greg Maturi, said help is needed because the fun comes at a cost. “We can use volunteers as chaperones for the kids. We could use financial support because there are some costs involved,” Maturi said. “We can use transportation, people who can help transport them from Horizon Science Academy to The Boys and Girls Club and then help them to get home after The Boys and Girls Club in the afternoon.” The summer open gym ends on July 27. It’s open to any child ages 7 to 16. Anyone interested in volunteering can call the Boys and Girls Club at 330-782-2714 or St. Dom’s at 330-783-1900.
