Visual Prayers

This Sunday, October 16th, Caterina Benincasa Dominican Monastery in New Castle, Delaware will open a year-long art exhibition titled: “Visual Prayers: a celebration of the beauty of faith featuring Christian art and literary works by Dominican Nuns of the monasteries of the United States and Canada for the new evangelization.” A special opening event will be held on Sunday, October 16th from 2 to 5 pm at the monastery’s gallery located at 6 Church Drive in New Castle. The event will feature a presentation by Dr. Jem Sullivan on “The Beauty of Faith: Art and Literature in Life and Mission”. Dr. Sullivan is a professor of the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C., and the author of “The Beauty of Faith: Using Christian Art to Spread Good New” published by Our Sunday Visitor Press in 2010. Also presenting on Sunday will be Sr. Mary of Jesus, a Dominican Nun from Monastery of Mary the Queen in Elmira NY. Sr. Mary of Jesus will speak on the early beginnings of the Nuns at the Monastery of Corpus Christi in the Bronx, NY, and of the beautifully detailed artwork they became known for throughout New York in the beginning of the 20th century. “Visual Prayers” will feature two more special events over the course of the year: on May 31st, featuring Sr. Marie Therese from Monastère Notre-Dame du Rosairein Berthierville, Quebec will give a presentation on paper making, and on September 30, 2012, Sr. Nancy Murray, OP will give a dramatic interpretation of the life of St. Catherine of Siena. The exhibit will be open for viewing Saturday afternoons from 1-6PM or by appointment from October 2011 until September 30, 2012.
