The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments decreed (May 23, 2000) that “throughout the world the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name Divine Mercy Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that mankind will experience in the years to come.” Devotion to Divine Mercy was promoted by St. Faustina, who was canonized in Rome by Bl. John Paul II on April 30, 2000.
To hear a talk from the then Fr. Augustine DiNoia OP at the Dominican House of Studies on some of the theological foundations of the Divine Mercy devotion & the new collect for Bl. John Paul II, check out this post from the popular blog, Dominican History.
There is a plenary indulgence today, which can be obtained in one of two ways: see here.
