The Art of the Beautiful Lecture Series – Fall/Winter 2014-2015

The Thomistic Institute and the Catholic Artists Society are cosponsoring a series of lectures this Fall and Winter that will take place at the Catholic Center at NYU in New York City. A poster from the Catholic Artists Society has the full details for each talk.
The series features six eminent scholars and theologians, addressing the theme “Redeeming Culture in Christ.” The series opens with Father John Saward (Oxford University) on Saturday, October 11th, and will end with His Excellency, The Most Reverend James D. Conley, Bishop of Lincoln, NE on Saturday, March 14, 2015. Other speakers include Professor Ryan Topping (St. Thomas More College), Ms. Julia Yost (Yale University), Professor Thomas Hibbs (Baylor University) and Rev. Bruno M. Shah, O.P. (University of Notre Dame).
On October 11, Rev. John Saward of Oxford University will speak on “The Poverty of the Church and the Beauty of the Liturgy.” On November 8, Ryan N.S. Topping will speak on “The Artist after God: a History with a Lesson.” On December 6 Thomas S. Hibbs will speak on “Aesthetics and Culture: Maritain, Modernity, and Beauty.” On January 17, Julia Yost will present on “Anglo-Catholic Modernism: Writing Religious Beauty in the Modern Era.” On February 14, Rev. Bruno M. Shah, OP, will speak on “Film, the Aesthetics of Death, and the Culture of Life: Picturing Motion after Modernity.” Finally, on March 14, the Most Reverend James D. Conley will speak on “Beauty, Culture, and the New Evangelization.”
All the lectures are free and open to the public. Each will begin at 7:30 pm and will be followed by a reception and sung Compline in the chapel at the Catholic Center at NYU.
