J.R.R. Tolkien Talk at the University of Maryland

September 23, 2014

Br. Patrick Mary Briscoe, OP, will give a lecture at the Catholic Student Center at the University of Maryland titled “Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost: The Spirituality of J.R.R. Tolkien” on Thursday, September 25 at 7:00pm. Br. Patrick offered a synopsis of his talk: “Tolkien’s work is often accused of being escapist, indeed many readers approach the world of Middle Earth as if it were far removed from our own. But why then does the story captivate us? Why is the tale so compelling? Does something deeper inform the very heart of Tolkien’s masterful myth?” Br. Patrick joined the Order of Preachers in 2011 and made solemn profession on August 9, 2014. Before entering the Order, Br. Patrick studied philosophy and French at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. His Dominican vocation began at St. Mary’s where he was taught by Fr. A.C. Fabian, OP.
