Order, Chaos, and Rebirth: The Tree of Life

On April 3, Albert Paretsky, O.P., delivered a lecture at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in California examining Terence Malick’s The Tree of Life in the light of the work of Andrei Belyi, a Russian anthroposophist. The talk, entitled “Order, Chaos, and Rebirth: A synthesis of Russian symbolism, cinema, music & art,” read The Tree of Life from the perspective of Andrei Belyi’s 1922 novel Kotik Letaev, which employed symbolist principles in a way that can be likened to Malick’s film. A screening of the film followed the talk.
